Why a Waterloo Region Lawn Is Harder Than It Looks
Lawns here sit on heavy clay, come out of five months under snow, and get roughly twenty weeks to do all of their growing. That combination is unforgiving of a lawn cut too short, fed on the calendar rather than the season, or left to compact under traffic all summer. We work on weekly visits and season packages rather than one-off cuts, because a lawn responds to what happens across a season, not to a single afternoon.
What a Weekly Visit Covers
- Mowing and trimming. Cutting height matters more than frequency: the deck goes up through summer so the grass shades its own roots, and back down for the last cut of autumn so it does not mat under snow. Trimming and edging around beds, walls and walkways is part of the visit.
- Fertilisation and weed control. Feeding matched to the season rather than the calendar — spring growth, summer hold, autumn root feed. A lawn dense enough to crowd weeds out needs less product on it.
- Core aeration. Clay compacts, and a compacted lawn cannot take up water or feed no matter what goes on top of it. Done when your lawn actually needs it, not every year by default.
- Seasonal cleanup. Winter debris cleared and the first feed down in spring; leaves off before they mat and smother, a final cut and the beds put down in autumn.
When Maintenance Is Not the Answer
Some lawns cannot be maintained back to health. Cutting them well only keeps a struggling lawn tidy, and we would rather say so on the first visit than bill you for it every week. Where the ground itself is the problem, sod installation and lawn replacement is the actual fix, and what goes in underneath decides whether the new lawn takes.
Signs the ground is the problem, not the mowing:
- Water runs toward the house instead of away from it.
- There is an inch or two of topsoil sitting over builder’s fill.
- More than half of what is green out there is weed rather than grass.
- The same bare patches come back in the same places every year.
