Project Briefing

This 250 sq ft section of front lawn along a Cambridge curb had thinned out, with large straw-brown dead areas, dandelions and broadleaf weeds, and a street lamp, a pad-mounted utility cabinet and two utility pedestals sit right at the edge of it. Our crew stripped the old lawn to bare soil and raked the bed smooth and level, setting crisp edges at the curb and along the driveway’s paver border. New sod was cut tight around the lamp post and the utility pads, finished flush to the hardscape and watered in. The established flower bed beside it was not disturbed. See how we approach sod installation in Cambridge.

Before

Dead Patches and Weeds

Seen from the driveway, the old lawn is thin and marked by broad straw-coloured patches, with weedy clumps and a dandelion seed head scattered through the grass. The street lamp and the utility cabinet with its pedestals stand near the curb.

Stripped and Raked Level

With the old growth gone, exposed soil fills the space between the lamp post, the driveway’s paver trim and the stone-edged flower bed. Faint rake lines cross the surface, and long-handled tools lean against the utility cabinet.

Sod Cut Around the Utilities

From a similar angle at the foot of the driveway, fresh sod now runs from the curb to the paver border and back to the flower bed, meeting the lamp-post base and the utility pad’s brick edging. Faint seams show.

The Details

Fitting New Sod Between Fixed Edges in Cambridge

On a lawn this small, the edges decide how finished it looks. This one is framed on three sides by a paver-trimmed driveway, the street curb and a planted bed, with a street lamp and a utility pad at its edge.

First Sod Rows Along Driveway Border Cambridge

Along the Driveway Border

A row of rectangular pavers trims the lawn side of the stamped-concrete driveway. Sod went down against that border early, with a second run following the curb toward the lamp post. Working off a straight, fixed edge gives the rows that follow a true line to butt against.

New Sod Watering By Utility Cabinet Cambridge

Lamp Post and Utility Pad

Seen from the house side, the street lamp rises from the lawn beside the curb, standing at the corner of a brick-edged, stone-filled pad that holds a squat dark cabinet and a pale green pedestal. New sod runs right up to the pad’s edging and leaves the stones and equipment clear, while a crew member bends to the sod beside the cabinet.

New Sod Beside Lavender Bed Cambridge

The Planted Bed

Toward the house, the new lawn meets an existing stone-edged bed of lavender, pink and red blooms and solar path lights. Sod runs up to the bed’s edge, and the plantings are still in place in this view, taken while the new lawn was being watered.

How This Cambridge Front Lawn Came Together

Each stage below was photographed on the same September day. The old lawn was still in place at 11:15 a.m., and the new sod was being watered by 12:53 p.m.

1

Lifting the Weedy Growth

The weedy lawn came out first. Working with spades and shovels along the curb and around the utility pad, the crew lifted the old growth and heaped it into wheelbarrows. Pulling that growth out, instead of burying it under the new lawn, matters because weed roots left in the soil can sprout again beneath fresh sod.

2

Hand-Raking the Soil

Once the growth was off, the crew worked the exposed soil by hand with rakes, leaving a smooth surface that runs right up to the curb, the paver edging along the driveway and the stone border of the flower bed. That smoothness matters, since sod roots in best where its underside sits flat on the soil, with no lumps or gaps beneath it.

3

Laying and Fitting the Rolls

Rolls were staged on the driveway and moved by wheelbarrow. With sod already down along the paver border and the curb, the crew filled in toward the middle, kneeling to unroll rolls and set cut pieces. Around the lamp post and the utility pad, pieces were cut to fit. By early afternoon, the new sod was being watered by hose.
