A New Front Lawn Under a Mature Waterloo Oak
A thinning 800 sq ft Waterloo front lawn under a mature oak, stripped, topsoiled, levelled and re-sodded around an ornamental-grass island bed.
Project Briefing
Under the dense canopy of a large mature oak, this 800 sq ft Waterloo front lawn had thinned to patchy, browned grass, with soil showing through in places. Our crew took the lawn down to bare, sandy soil, spread a layer of dark topsoil and levelled it with a wide landscape rake. New sod was laid in rows parallel to the sidewalk and cut cleanly to both driveways and to the sweeping curve of the ornamental-grass island bed, with the crew working around the established plantings and keeping every one in place. See how we approach sod installation in Waterloo.

Thin Grass Under the Oak
Early afternoon sun filters through the oak onto thin, straw-coloured grass with patches of bare ground. The island bed of ornamental grasses sits out in the lawn between the home’s driveway and the neighbour’s, with the porch beds behind.

New Topsoil, Levelled
Later the same afternoon, a fresh layer of soil blankets the yard from the driveway to the island bed. A crew member pulls a levelling rake through it in long arcs, smoothing the surface ahead of the new sod.

Fresh Sod, Freshly Watered
The following morning, new sod stretches from the home’s driveway to the neighbour’s under a running sprinkler, finishing crisply along the sidewalk and around the island bed. Its rows and offset joints still show, as they normally do on a newly laid lawn.
Three Features That Shaped This Waterloo Lawn
This front yard was far from a blank slate. A spreading oak overhead, a planted island bed within the lawn and paving on three sides were all in place, and the old sod came out and the new lawn went in beneath and around them.

Limbs Reaching Over the Lawn
The oak’s limbs reach out over the front lawn, and in the first photos of the job the grass beneath sits in dappled, broken shade. Acorns and fallen oak leaves were scattered across the old lawn and the sidewalk, and the new sod now lies beneath the same canopy.

A Planted Island in the Lawn
Tall ornamental grasses, pink coneflowers and a low, silvery groundcover fill a mulched island bed that sits within the lawn. Once the old sod was lifted, the bed stood in open ground on all sides, and the new lawn now wraps around it in one continuous curve.

Two Driveways and a Sidewalk
In this frame the old sod is already off beside the home’s asphalt driveway and the walkway to the porch. The neighbour’s driveway closes the opposite side and a sidewalk runs along the front, and the new lawn now meets all four surfaces in clean, defined lines.
From Thin Grass to New Sod Under the Oak
From one afternoon to the next morning, the photos trace the front yard as the old sod came out, a fresh soil bed went in, and the new lawn was laid and watered.
Lifting the Old Sod
The old sod came up and was loaded into wheelbarrows, and by mid-afternoon the front yard lay open as pale ground from one driveway to the other. Lifting old sod rather than burying it keeps decaying roots and thatch from settling beneath the new lawn.
Building a New Soil Bed
New soil, far darker than the stripped ground beneath it, was spread across the yard and carried right to the driveway, the porch walkway and the island bed, whose rim was left as a crisp, cut edge. A broad levelling rake smoothed it in long, curving passes. A bed raked smooth lets each piece of sod settle flat, with no hollows beneath it to dry out before it roots.
Fitting and Watering the New Sod
The new sod followed in long rows across the yard, end joints offset row to row so they do not form one continuous seam. Pieces were cut to the sidewalk and the two driveways and shaped to the island bed. By the morning after the soil went down, the lawn was in place, a sprinkler was watering it and a crew member was blowing soil off the neighbour’s driveway.

Re-Sodding Beneath a Waterloo Oak, Frame by Frame
Taken on site over one afternoon and the following morning, these photographs trace the lawn from thin grass beneath the oak, through stripping and a freshly raked soil bed, to new sod under a running sprinkler.
