Both Sides of the Sidewalk, Re-Sodded in Cambridge
A 900 sq ft Cambridge front lawn and city boulevard, cut out with a sod cutter and re-sodded on both sides of the sidewalk.
Project Briefing
This 900 sq ft Cambridge job covered both sides of the public sidewalk: the front lawn around a white-barked tree and clipped foundation shrubs, and the city boulevard out to the curb, street-light pole included. We cut out the old lawn with a walk-behind sod cutter and peeled it back to bare soil along the sidewalk, the stamped-concrete driveway and the side property line. New sod was trimmed tight along the sidewalk and driveway and fitted to the shrub beds and around the tree, giving one clean, even lawn on both sides of the walk. See how we approach sod installation in Cambridge.

Sod Cutter on the Front Lawn
In the first photo of the tear-out, the operator works the Classen cutter on the front lawn beside the driveway. To the left, wheelbarrows stand on the opened strip down the side of the lawn, one loaded with soil and torn-up grass, and loose earth streaks the walk.

Both Sides of the Sidewalk
From the boulevard beside its light pole, the view crosses the walk to the opened side strip, bare soil with wheelbarrows on it. On the near side, cut boulevard pieces curl back from the ground beside a shovel.

Lawn and Boulevard, Re-Sodded
Photographed the next morning, new sod reaches from the shrub beds down to the walk and carries on across the boulevard. Its edges hold crisp lines at the sidewalk and stamped driveway, and the tree at its centre keeps a ring of open soil.
Compact Kit for a Lawn Split by a Public Walk
The tear-out photos show compact, hand-guided gear: a hand-pushed sod cutter, orange wheelbarrows, and rakes and shovels laid beside a drum roller on the driveway. That scale of kit suits a lawn bordered by sidewalk, curb and stamped concrete.

The Classen Cutter
Steered on foot, the Classen machine works the boulevard beside the curb, with faint arcs of fresh cuts showing in the grass beside it. A sod cutter slices beneath the root mat at a set depth, so the old lawn lifts away in cut pieces rather than hand-dug clumps.

Wheelbarrows on the Cut Edges
Orange wheelbarrows worked alongside the cutter: one pushed along the opened side strip, another waiting just behind the operator. Lifting old grass out, instead of burying it beneath the new, avoids leaving a decaying layer between fresh roots and the soil they need to reach.

Tools Staged on the Driveway
Rakes, shovels and a drum roller lie side by side on the stamped driveway as a crew member walks past them toward the garage. Staging tools on the hard surface keeps the lawn clear for the cutter and barrows, while a long-handled shovel lies on the walk beside the lifted edge.
How the Cambridge Frontage Was Re-Sodded
The photos capture two points in this job: the tear-out on a late-September afternoon and the finished lawn the next morning. The steps below trace the work from one to the other.
Running the Cutter
The earliest photo catches the Classen cutter at work close to the driveway’s edge. Minutes later it is out on the boulevard, guided along the strip between the curb and the sidewalk. Its passes score the old grass with visible cut lines, dividing it into pieces ready to lift.
Lifting the Cut Pieces
Cut pieces came away beside the walk, at the driveway’s edge and down the side of the lawn, and the wheelbarrows were parked on the bare ground left behind. On the boulevard, curved sections came up near the light pole. Clearing to the concrete lets new sod butt against it rather than ride on a lip of old roots.
Fresh Sod to the Concrete
By the next morning, new sod covered the front lawn and the boulevard, where the outlines of individual pieces still show faintly. Where it meets the concrete, the new sod runs right up to the edge, and a clean line divides it from the planting bed. A garden hose has been run out along the bed.

These seven photos run in the order they were taken: the cutter on the front lawn and boulevard, tools staged on the driveway, cut pieces lifted along the walk and boulevard, and the new sod the next morning.
