What Actually Changes the Number

The rate is flat, so the area does the arithmetic. What moves a Kitchener driveway away from that figure is the ground underneath it and how much has to leave the site.

Area Does the Arithmetic

A driveway is priced by the square foot, so the total follows the area you pave. A single driveway is usually somewhere around 400 square feet and a double closer to 600, which is why the same rate produces very different totals. Below the $2,000 minimum the job is priced at the minimum rather than by area.

Driveways Dig Deeper Than Patios

A driveway carries vehicles, not garden chairs, so the excavation goes deeper and considerably more material leaves the property. That excavation, the base and the disposal all sit inside the $16, which is why the rate is quoted all-in rather than as a paver price with extras bolted on.

Access and Ground Conditions

A driveway a machine can reach is a different job from one where every load is barrowed past the house. Soft ground, buried fill or water showing up during excavation all change how much base the surface needs, and that is the sort of thing we would rather find on a site visit than halfway through a build.

What the Square Foot Rate Includes

The quoted rate is all-in for the build itself. These three stages are the job, and none of them arrive later as a line item you were not expecting.

1

Excavation and Disposal

The existing surface comes up and the sub-base is dug out to the depth a driveway needs, which is deeper than a patio because it has to carry vehicle loads. Spoil leaves the site the same day, and that haulage is part of the rate rather than a line item afterwards.

2

Base and Compaction

Granular base laid and mechanically compacted in lifts, with the depth set by what the excavation actually turns up rather than by a default spec. This is the stage that decides whether the driveway is still flat in ten years, because a paver surface is only ever as good as what sits under it.

3

Laying, Cutting and Edging

Pavers laid to the pattern and line agreed on site, cut in against the garage apron and the road edge, then edge restraints set and the joints filled and compacted so nothing migrates once cars start using it.

Interlock Driveway Cost Questions

Sixteen dollars per square foot installed, with a two thousand dollar minimum. The rate is flat rather than a sliding scale, so the area does the arithmetic: a single driveway of around four hundred square feet comes to roughly six thousand four hundred, and a double of around six hundred to roughly nine thousand six hundred. Excavation, base preparation, disposal and the pavers are all inside that number.

Because area is what the work follows. Two driveways on the same street can differ by three hundred square feet, and that difference is real excavation, real base and real pavers. A flat rate per square foot means you can measure your own driveway with a tape and reach the same number we would. The two thousand dollar minimum covers the setup any job needs regardless of how small it is.

Anything that varies too much between properties to price sight-unseen. Removing an existing concrete or asphalt surface, drainage work beyond the driveway itself, steps, lighting and retaining structures are quoted separately once we have seen the site. The rate itself covers excavation, base preparation, disposal and the pavers, which is the bulk of the work on most jobs.

Ontario-wide averages are wide enough to be close to useless, because a tight downtown lot and a new suburban build are different jobs before a paver is laid. What is useful is a rate you can apply to your own measurements. Ours is sixteen dollars per square foot installed across Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge, with a two thousand dollar minimum, covering excavation, base preparation, disposal and the pavers.
