What Actually Changes the Number
The rate buys a full replacement: lifting what is there, preparing the soil beneath it and laying fresh sod. What moves a Kitchener lawn away from the calculator figure is nearly always what sits underneath. The same bands apply to our Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge sod work.
Total Area Sets the Rate Band
Every job carries the same fixed load whether the lawn is four hundred square feet or two thousand: a sod cutter on site, a truck, a disposal run and a pallet order placed the morning of delivery. Spread across a bigger lawn that fixed portion shrinks, which is why a flat minimum applies below five hundred square feet and the rate keeps stepping down above it.
How Much Topsoil the Ground Needs
Sod roots into whatever it is laid on. Older Kitchener neighbourhoods often have depth to work with, while newer subdivisions built on stripped and regraded fill can be down to a couple of inches of anything workable. Screened topsoil is priced by volume rather than by area, so it is quoted once we see what is actually under the old lawn.
Access, Grade and Disposal Volume
A front lawn a truck can park beside is a different job from a back garden reached through a single gate, where every pallet and every barrow of lifted turf moves by hand. Correcting a grade that runs the wrong way, and unusually heavy disposal volumes, are the two other items that sit outside the square foot rate.
What the Square Foot Rate Covers
Three stages, all inside the figure the calculator returns. None of them reappear afterwards as a line item you were not expecting.
Removal and Disposal
The existing lawn is cut and lifted with a sod cutter, then loaded and hauled off site the same day. Spraying the old grass off and laying over the top is cheaper, and it is not what we do — dead thatch trapped under new sod is the most common reason a replacement lawn fails in its first season.
Soil Preparation and Grading
The exposed soil is broken up, levelled and graded away from the house so water runs off instead of pooling against the foundation. Low spots are filled and the whole surface is rolled to a firm, even bed before a single roll arrives on site.
Fresh-Cut Sod, Laid and Rolled
Sod is ordered for the morning it goes down, laid in staggered courses with tight seams, cut in around beds and walkways, then rolled to press the roots into contact with the soil. You get watering instructions before we leave, because the first fortnight decides the result.
