Why Choose an Interlock Patio Over a Wood Deck or Poured Concrete?

Your backyard should be a place to relax, not another chore on your to-do list. When planning a backyard upgrade in Kitchener, Waterloo, or Cambridge, interlock patios consistently outperform traditional wood decks and basic concrete slabs in longevity, aesthetic appeal, and overall ROI.

Reason 1

Superior Durability and Weather Resistance

Poured concrete inevitably cracks, and wood decks rot, splinter, and warp. High-density interlock pavers are engineered to withstand freezing Ontario winters and blistering summers without cracking. Their flexible system moves naturally with the ground, providing a foundation that lasts for decades.

Defining Your Outdoor Living Areas

Pavers offer the ultimate design freedom. We can use contrasting stone colors, unique laying patterns, and custom borders to visually separate your outdoor kitchen or dining area from a cozy fire pit lounge, creating a highly functional and resort-like backyard oasis.

reason 3

Low Maintenance and Effortless Upkeep

Forget the endless cycle of power washing, sanding, and re-staining a wood deck every single spring. An interlock patio requires virtually zero maintenance. With advanced polymeric sand permanently locking the joints, you won’t even have to worry about pulling weeds.

After contacting the company Evan/Right On Landscaping quickly made contact with me and we arranged a time for a visit/quote to be created. I asked for 2 options and both were given. After choosing the best fit for me and m budget, the lawn repair dates were quickly arranged with minor adjustments needing to be made due to Mother Nature's impact. Communications were quick and clear, and everything went very smoothly and exceeded my expectations. I won't know if the repair job really "takes" most likely until next spring when the lawn shows its "health" but I am very satisfied with the job that was done in October 2025.

I contacted Evan and he arrived quickly to quote replacing our sod on our front lawn and back garden, about 2,800 square feet. We have had it done a couple of times (by other companies) in the last 25 years and Evan’s professionalism and expertise were outstanding. He levelled our lawn beautifully, used high quality top soil and we have two amazing lawns to show for it. He asked questions along the way as to exactly what we wanted, were we happy with the levelling, edging, etc. Our neighbours were so impressed he’s doing three of their lawns as a result. These photos were taken today, exactly 7 days ago.

Evan did an Amazing job with our front and back yard. New sod in front and back, new mulch, garden edging, removed a very invasive bush that was popping up all over through the root system. Planted some new bushes I picked out, graded the whole area and built a stunning stone patio to solve our issue of having a very small deck prior. This was all done under the price that was quoted to us to just rip out and redo a bigger wooden deck. We couldn't be happier!
12/10 would recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Smoothest renovanation I've done. Right On replaced the fence in the back and laid sod on the whole property. Very pleased with the results.
Evan coordinated everything with the neighbors who were involved with the fence. The crew are friendly and reliable
They are definitely skilled professionals. They quickly and efficiently completed the project.
I would highly recommend them. I've included some photos of the fresh sod, and new fence.

Our Built-to-Last Patio Installation Process

A beautiful patio is worthless if it sinks, heaves, or floods your basement during a rainstorm. Our Kitchener-based hardscaping crews follow strict engineering and grading standards, ensuring your outdoor oasis remains perfectly flat and structurally sound for decades.

Area marked out and prepared before excavation begins

Step 1

1. Preparation

The location of the patio, walkway or driveway should be marked out first.
Utilities, phone companies and cable TV providers should then be contacted to locate buried cables and/or services.

Existing surface stripped and the area excavated to depth

Step 2

2. Excavation

The depth of excavation depends on soil type. Clay soil requires deeper excavation; sandy soil requires less. On average 6″ to 12″

Granular base compacted in lifts before the surface is laid

Step 3

3. Base

The excavated area is filled with a gravel base and compacted
using a gas-powered plate compactor in layers 2″ – 3″ thick. All
installations should be sloped away from the house/building for proper drainage.

Bedding course screeded flat before pavers are laid

Step 4

4. Screeding

Pavers are laid on a 1″ thick bed of
coarse sand or a 1/8″ open- graded chip placed directly on the compacted base. One-inch diameter pipes are often used as screeding guides on top of the gravel.
This bedding layer allows pavers to be leveled for smoothness and drainage.

Pavers laid to pattern across the screeded bedding course

Step 5

5. Laying The Pavers

Pavers are laid in the desired pattern directly on the screeded bedding material. String lines help to keep the joint lines straight. During this process walk on the pavers, not the screed bed.

Pavers cut to fit tight against a fixed edge

Step 6

6. Cutting

Pavers that do not fit along edges or around objects require cutting. Pavers are cut with a guillotine cutter or masonry saw. Proper safety gear must be worn while cutting and dustless or wet saws should be used to limit airborne silica.

Contrasting accent course laid into a paver field

Step 7

7. Accents

Use contrasting colors, textures and patterns to make accents.
Accents are easy to install and make your installation unique. They are often laid first before installing the main pattern.

Edge restraint fixed along the paver perimeter

Step 8

8. Edge Restraint

Edge restraints are a critical element in terms of the durability of a paver installation. They prevent the pavers from moving and shifting laterally. Both plastic and metal edge restraints are effective. Edge restraints must always be spiked into the compacted base. Various concrete edging materials also work well.

Laid pavers compacted with a plate compactor

Step 9

9. Compacting

After all the cuts have been made, and the edge restraints are in place, the pavers must be swept clean and then compacted with a plate compactor. This helps settle the pavers into the bedding material and creates a flat surface.

Polymeric sand swept into the paver joints

Step 10

10. Joint Material

Joint material plays an important role between pavers, in keeping weeds and other debris out. Your contractor can help you decide which joint material is right for your project.are effective. Edge restraints must always be spiked into the compacted base. Various concrete edging materials also work well.

Sealer applied across a finished paver surface

Step 11

11. Sealing

Some homeowners choose to apply a sealer to enhance the color of the pavers, while others choose to appreciate the colors as they are. If you choose to seal, you should plan to reseal
every 3-5 years. Always test sealer in a small hidden area to make sure you are satisfied with the results.are effective. Edge restraints must always be spiked into the compacted base. Various concrete edging materials also work well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Interlock Patios

Generally, ground-level interlock patios do not require a building permit in the Waterloo Region. However, if your patio design includes structural retaining walls over 3.3 feet (1 meter), raised decks, or significantly alters the property’s grading and drainage, a permit may be necessary. Our team handles all project planning to ensure full municipal compliance.

While the initial installation cost of a premium interlock patio can be similar to or slightly higher than a high-end wood or composite deck, the long-term return on investment is drastically better. Paver patios last 25 to 30 years with virtually zero maintenance, saving you thousands of dollars in staining, sealing, and board replacement.

Yes, interlock pavers provide an excellent, highly durable foundation for hot tubs. If you plan to install a spa, let our team know during the design phase. We will upgrade the foundation using a reinforced, extra-deep compacted HPB base to easily support the thousands of pounds of water and weight without any risk of settling.

No. We finish every custom patio installation by sweeping premium polymeric sand into the joints. Once activated with water, this specialized sand hardens like mortar. This locks the pavers securely in place and creates a permanent, solid barrier that prevents weed seeds from taking root and stops ants from nesting.

It depends far more on what has to happen before the pavers than on the paving itself. A bare, machine-accessible yard moves quickly; demolition of an existing patio, significant grade correction, a narrow side gate that turns every pallet into a barrow run, or steps and walls folded into the build all extend it. You get the sequence and the expected dates with the estimate, along with which stages are weather-dependent — heavy rain stops excavation, and ground too wet to compact properly stops the base going in. We would rather move a date than rush the stage that decides whether the patio is still level in ten years.
